Why does Portugal need battery storage?

Battery storage drives decarbonisation of the power system by storing excess renewable power, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions.

Battery storage provides stabilising services to the grid, by managing frequency, voltage and electricity supply and demand. This helps provide a reliable and secure electricity grid for all.

Battery storage drives consumer value. Integrating renewable power using battery storage reduces the need for expensive back up generation, promoting an affordable energy transition.

What is a battery storage project ?

Battery storage systems are made up of many individual battery cells, linked together and connected to the electricity grid. It can import electricity when there is extra renewable power being generated and export this electricity when there is less renewable generation available.

StorSystems’ battery assets will connect to strategic locations on the Portuguese electricity grid, to provide maximum support to the network to support the transition to a lower carbon power system.

High safety and security standards

Battery storage systems are equipped with advanced safety features to reduce risk of incidents, including fire. Extensive monitoring, technology and contingency plans will be in place to mitigate any risks.

Limited noise impact

Battery storage systems generally produce minimal noise, and most systems are designed with noise reduction features, ensuring very low levels of noise during operation.

Minimal visual impact

Battery storage systems are compact and can be designed to blend in with their surroundings. Landscaping can also minimise the impact of battery storage on the surrounding area.

Reduced land use

Battery storage requires relatively small footprints compared to other energy infrastructure projects, and can be installed on unused industrial land or near existing grid assets, minimising disruption to the community.

Low environmental impact

Systems do not emit pollutants during operations, and construction is carefully managed to minimise environmental impact.
